The Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker is one of the best smokers you can buy, no matter what the price. The WSM gives you precise temperature control and the ability to cook slowly and at low temperatures with unattended operation for up to 10 hours.
Many teams that win the barbecue championship will only use the WSM. These cooks have a cult with a strong sense of community among their owners.
Weber Smokey Mountain records look just like your high school girlfriend. Eventually you marry them both and enjoy their company for the rest of your life, or you slowly drift apart, but you do remember funny moments with warm memories.
About five years ago I broke up with my WSM, but I made sure she moved into a nice house. I’m sure it’s still a great barbecue.
WSM is available in three sizes: 22.5, 18.5 and 14.5 inch.
All RMS have common characteristics. They have an upper grid under the dome lid and a lower grid above the water basin. Under the waterpot there is a high-quality carbon ring and a standard carbon grid.
The temperature of the smokers can be accurately controlled by adjusting the air inlets at the bottom of the smoker and the outlet at the top. Most people leave the upper channel completely open and only the lower channels regulate the airflow.
Smokers have a side door that can be opened to add coal or fill the pot with water.

What do I like about WSM– smokers?
Thanks to the WSM I was able to learn how to barbecue. Before the RMS I had cheap smokers who were leaking and I tried to keep the temperature high.
The temperature control you get with WSM is amazing. You’ll need a few chefs to know how to connect your stove. The most common mistake is being impatient and heating up the stove too quickly. Once the WSM has overheated to a certain temperature, it is difficult to restore it to its original state. Once you understand how to use this stove, it will be as easy as falling from a tree trunk.
Install and forget. The large volume of the carbon ring in combination with precise air control allows the smoker, once installed, to work for several hours. You can set up your WSM and then walk around the city all day on a business trip. When you come home, the temperature will be exactly the same as when you left.
Price. RMS costs less than $500, but they cook better than most smokers in the $1,000 to $2,000 price range. When it comes to paying for services, WSM steals.
What I don’t like about WSM.
If you have never used WSM before, watch this video from Weber. It will help you understand what I think are the biggest problems of these smokers.
Get out of here: The WSM is a three-part plate that has to be dismantled in order to move from one place to another. I kept mine in the garage, but there was a place in the yard where I used it. To bring a smoker to the shipyard, you always have to make at least three trips. It often cost me four times because I dropped a grill or a pot of water. Then after cooking you have to take everything apart and bring it back to the garage in pieces. It’s easy to move a smoker, it’s just exhausting.
Resetting the shaft: There is no axis processing system in the WSM. When you have finished cooking and the coals have hatched, pick up the bottom part and let the ashes escape. It always ended with the creation of a cloud of ash and the sniffing of dust. Again, not so much, but it got boring.
Water basin: One of the most discussed topics in the world of MSR is, How to use a bowl of water. Some say that it is used to add moisture to the flesh or that the moisture it creates helps to form the bark. Others say that only a large heat sink is needed to keep the temperature stable. People who think it’s a heat diffuser fill a pot with sand or a large terracotta dish.
I was never sure if it was the right answer, and I kept trying different approaches.
Whichever way you choose, it is undeniable that the pan was filled with water after cooking and that cleaning was a real headache.
Everything about the water tank irritated me. Looking back, I really hated the waterpot.
Size 18.5: I had an 18.5-inch WSM, and it was too small. You can easily put six Boston butts on this smoker, but when it comes to ribs and chest, it can get tight very quickly. There are alternatives and burglaries you can think of to make things work, but that’s not enough.
When the 22.5-inch version came out, I thought long and hard about getting it, but eventually I decided to give it up. Although the 22.5 inch stove is the ideal size, it still poses the same problems for transport, ash removal and handling of water jars.
Which size WSM should you get?
I’d say the 22.5-inch WSM is the best among smokers. I see no reason not to have the biggest smoker, and the price difference between this 18.5 and this 18.5 is not very significant given that you will be using this product for 15 to 20 years.
Here is a picture of the reviews people left for the 22-inch stove on Weber’s website. People love that stove.
I’m not a fan of the 14.5-inch WSM. Weber introduced this little boy after people started making homemade versions with a Smokey Joe kettle and a custom tamale pot. 14.5 inch cute and functional. It’s a nice addition to the collection, if that’s your thing. But as far as a good price goes, then… you might as well smoke meat on a regular 22.5-inch tea grill.
Anti-Tank Grill Top 24 inches
The Weber Summit 24-inch charcoal grill is an absolute beast and a worthy competitor to the 22.5 WSM. Summit is a kamado-style metal stove, a great oven for low temperatures and slow smoking, and a high-temperature grill.
Here is a good video that will guide you through this amazing oven.
Energy efficiency at the top is crazy, and many people say that a single load of coal can withstand low and cold temperatures for more than 24 hours. The propane carbon ignition system is as good and functional as the Weber Performer Deluxe.
The only disadvantage of this top is the price that has to be paid. You can view the current prices by clicking on the links below. Depending on whether you get a basic model or a model with a grid centre, the top costs 3 to 4 times more than 22 WSM.
If you want the most disgraceful grill that Weber has ever made, leave the money and buy yourself a toll. If, like the other 99% of the population, you just want a great smoker, then 22.5 RMS is just what you need.
against the Weber boiler of 26.75
The 26.75 inch Weber boiler is also a legitimate candidate for the 22.5 inch RSM.
Although you can use a standard 22-inch charcoal grill as a smoker, it is limited in size and if you do not use customer service accessories, accurate temperature control can be problematic. The imposing size of the 26.75 inch boiler overcomes these limitations.
Here is a slowly smoked pig stretching from head to toe between the 26-inch teapot and the Weber pick. Justin uses a Slow N Sear coal basket with a 26 inch boiler, but you can get the same result with the Snake/Fuse technique.
I love the 26-inch teapot because of its price (especially in comparison to the top) and the fact that it is a great smoker, as well as the spectacular grill.
If you are looking for the best all-in-one solution, a 26-inch teapot may be more suitable than a 22.5-inch WSM. You’ll be ridiculously happy with any one of them.
